About Ġakobb
Jacob George Azzopardi focuses on figurative painting and portraiture to explore identity, self-representation, and psychological presence. Working primarily through drawing and oil painting, he investigates how the human figure can communicate internal states that are often difficult to express through language. Influenced by the Baroque and Dutch Golden Age traditions, his work emphasises observation, technical discipline, and sensitivity to material.
Growing up in Ħal Qormi, Malta, where religious imagery is deeply embedded in local culture, shaped his early understanding of art. Through a research-led studio practice, Azzopardi combines traditional craft with contemporary conceptual inquiry, creating work that invites reflection on perception and the complexity of the self.
